Kevin Millwood Possible Trade Updates...

Millwood is dead weight:

http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=106&position=P

K/9 last yea fell to his lowest total of his career, 5.57

He enjoyed his second highest LOB (left of on base)%, 78.6

His FIP was 4.80 in 2009

His ERA was over 5 in both 2008 and 2007, he was also injured both of those seasons

He is 35 years old and is owed $12 million

On top of all that he would cost prospects

What is it that he offers that Garland of Davis does not?

Here is a great piece talking about his strand (LOB%) rate:

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/the-pleasures-of-strand-rate

Another good piece regarding his FIP v. ERA:

http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/index.php/april-fipera-splits-the-benefactors

If the O's were to make this deal then my confidence in McPhail would take a major hit and the probability of ever turning this ship around diminishes a good bit...

Heart Wrenching:

Of the expensive arms linked to the Orioles, Kevin Millwood makes the most sense, according to the Baltimore Sun's Peter Schmuck.

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/schmuck/2009/12/orioles_arms_race.html

Jon Garland:

30, FIP of 4.48, 4.81 K/9, owed nothing, made 8.75 last season

Doug Davis:

34, FIP of 4.84, 6.46 K/9, owed nothing w/ 7.25M turned down

What we should be doing:

Dealing Millwood would also allow Texas to free up some money to pursue a right-handed bat. Perhaps Vladimir Guerrero or Jermaine Dye.

EVEN MORE LOGICAL: Sign Harden, Sheets, Duscherer, Pinerio, Bedard

-Each of those can be signed for less than $12M, cost no prospects (perhaps a draft pick, but then again let us not forget Billy Rowell amongst others), and have the potential to be a top of the rotation SP, more importantly they are not 35 years old

Why are we the only team in this horrific of an idea if it is actually so good?

Hence my position this entire time. When AM approached the Rangers, they initially asked for Tillman, and when I read that, I almost died. Literally, I was eating a chicken wrap after returning from class and almost choked to death. MAYBE if Millwood was a FA, I'd consider signing him. However, the Rangers need to realize that we are doing them a favor by taking that contract off of their hands...that leaves them in no position to be greedy. I think that he (AM) should just stop trying to negotiate before we get screwed over here...unless he's working with Miss Cleo and sees something in Millwood's future that I don't.

Somebody like Dutch. or Garland will probably want 3 or 4 years at a big hunk of change. Given what the Orioles have coming, I'm not crazy about having an overpriced, so-so pitcher cluttering up the rotation.

Garland may get two years. Three or four years seems a little much.

Are you sure Garland or Davis wants to come here?

What I believe is the attraction of Millwood is that he wouldn't have a choice. He is a 1 yr commitment, and if he the O's can get him for a 2nd or 3rd tier prospect then I say why not.

I don't think it is worth falling off the apple cart over unless we give up a significant prospect. If we give up anything more than say Berken then go ahead and go crazy.

To question MacPhail's ability as a GM based solely on a trade like this might be considered overreacting. Frankly, the Eaton signing was probably more questionable in my mind than Millwood for a second or third tier prospect and paying $9-12M in salary for one year.

I find it hilarious that this outrage is coming from the guy who suggested we trade Tillman or Matusz amongst others for Vasquez.

Look, AM is only going to obtain Millwood for minimal prospects. No free agent pitchers are going to come here for 1 year so this move makes sense as long as it doesn't cost much. Which it won't or it won't get done.

Chill people.

Relievers are so hit and miss, and we don't have to part with any of our younger arms? I am ok with this trade. I am not a fan of Millwood and think he will crash to earth this year, but don't think we are giving up a ton for the trade. I realize that Ray was coming off injury, but sometimes (often actually) pitchers never recover their pre-injury form coming off that type of injury.
